Governing for Generations: Building Efficient and Sustainable Family Businesses in Armenia
11:00 am – 11:15 am: Registration and Opening
- Welcome Address: Brief introduction by the Armenian Institute of Directors outlining the workshop's goal to engage family businesses in efficient and sustainable governance.
- Overview: Introduction of the day's theme, highlighting how family firms must balance economic performance with the preservation of family harmony and legacy.
11:15 am – 12:45 pm: Main Session (1.5 hours)
- Topic: Responsible Ownership and Stewardship: Structuring Governance for Long-Term Sustainability
- Description: This presenter-led session will explore why family firms are unique and how formal governance drives long-term success. The speaker will discuss the transition from informal family ties to "responsible ownership," where family leaders act as stewards prioritizing the firm's continuity and long-term viability over short-term expediency. It will also cover the importance of formal governance mechanisms—such as family councils and boards of directors—in separating business roles from family roles to mitigate risks and ensure sustainable decision-making.
12:45 pm – 1:15 pm: Networking and Coffee Break (30 minutes)
An opportunity for family business leaders and AIoD members to connect informally, share experiences, and prepare for the deep-dive discussions.
1:15 pm – 2:45 pm: Roundtable Discussions (1.5 hours)
- Participants can choose to join one of the two simultaneous roundtables
- Roundtable 1: Navigating Intergenerational Succession and Managing Family Conflict
- Focus: Succession is one of the most critical and vulnerable transitions a family firm will face. This table will discuss the anatomy of family conflict (such as sibling rivalry or parent-child tensions over control) and how to manage the different temporal orientations of senior and junior generations.
- Key Takeaways: Participants will learn about "generational brokerage"—the process of mediating between generations so they can jointly understand their past, present, and future goals—and how to effectively prepare the next generation for leadership.
- Roundtable 2: The Tradition and Innovation Paradox: Fostering Sustainable Growth and CSR
- Focus: Family firms often face a paradoxical tension between honoring their historical roots (tradition) and remaining agile enough to modernize and innovate. This discussion will explore how to turn this tension into a competitive advantage.
- Key Takeaways: Participants will discuss strategies for "innovation through tradition," learning how to internalize past knowledge and reinterpret it to create new products or services. The table will also explore how formalizing Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and community engagement can protect the family's socioemotional wealth, enhance reputation, and ensure transgenerational survival.
2:45 pm: Wrap-up and Close
- Brief concluding remarks summarizing the insights from the roundtables and outlining the next steps for continuous governance improvement.
